Pop Warner has canceled the rest of this year’s football season for three teams in Central New York due to bad spectator behavior.

Tri-Valley Pop Warner announced in a letter Wednesday that Utica, Rome and Oneida will “cease all tackle football for the remainder of the 2021 season.” The letter blamed “spectator actions” during one or more Utica games on Sept. 12, Rome on Sept. 19, and Oneida on Sept. 12 and Sept. 18.All Pop Warner games league-wide scheduled for Sunday, September 26 have also been postponed.

The decisions were made during a pair of official/referee meetings. Tri-Valley and the Mohawk Valley Chapter of Certified Football Officials will meet in the spring to reassess the decision, according to the letter.

WKTV reports a video circulating on Facebook showed a brawl at a Rome game on Sunday; parents and other spectators were throwing punches and shouting at each other. The kids playing in the Pop Warner game had to be pulled away by coaches and officials.

“This past weekend a few of our games experienced some unfortunate behavior from some of our spectators. As Tri-Valley representatives we have a real concern that this behavior is escalating,” the Tri-Valley Pop Warner board of directors said in a statement shared by the North Utica Raiders on Facebook.
